Make an Editor’s Day

They notice when you write with care.

Last week I really enjoyed editing one article … to the extent that afterward, I even thanked the writer.

What made it so special? While I still needed to make some editorial changes, those were only matters of fine tuning.

The writer had done his job. He’d put himself in place of readers — and provided the information they would want to know about the topic.

He’d told the story simply and well, mixing background information with personal perspectives —while making every word count.

This doesn’t happen by accident. Simply knowing the topic isn’t enough. Words seldom appear in just the right order. So this writer invested the effort to treat his readers with respect by giving them his best.

That’s rare. Ask any editor. They remember those few who go the extra mile.
