Last Year’s Work

Do your best … and keep improving.

I remember being pleased with the pages I designed for the annual event I’d attended. So this past week, I wondered if I should refer to it as I crafted the pages for the next issue.

I opted instead to simply give these new pages my best effort, complementing the writer’s text with photos I’d taken. With a different emphasis for this year’s event, I found myself choosing quite different images, then basing the layout around how the photos could work with the text.

Only after I’d polished the pages did I refer to my work from last year. That was wise.

What I’d once seen as good, I now found disappointing. I find that encouraging. In the past year, I’ve progressed in my craft.

The next year, I hope I can say the same. I try to give each project my best. Equally important, I seek to keep learning — studying the work of top practitioners and adopting their best practices.

Whatever you write, I hope you do the same.
