Review Your Work

Do you give yourself time to make revisions?

I could have settled for the versions of the magazine articles I’d completed a few weeks ago. I’d already gone over the layouts several times.

Since they were for the next issue, I had set them aside while I completed this one.

But today as I revisited those pages, I kept seeing aspects I could improve. Not huge changes, but little things throughout to make them better.

On two facing pages, I’d accidentally used the same headline colors. I hadn’t noticed because I’d created the articles independently. But as I saw them in context, the problem jumped out at me. An easy fix, but only because I’d reviewed the elements with fresh eyes.

Page by page as I check my work, I see little things I can improve. As a result, my readers can have a smoother, more enjoyable experience.

When deadlines press, we may have to settle for good enough. But if we can make the effort to finish drafts with just a little breathing room, we can give our readers something better.
