Read or Analyze?

Make the most of your regular reading.

I work primarily with print publications, so I subscribe not only to a daily newspaper, but also to several magazines.

Each offers the work of multiple writers, editors, proofreaders, photographers, and typographers — all skills I seek to improve.

Some of their articles I only skim; others I read in depth. At times the subject matter makes the difference. But often it’s the writer’s skill.

Those are the pieces I need to read twice: once for the content and again to analyze what made it work.

What ingredients did the writer incorporate? How was it structured? What role did transitions and subheads play? How about the length and variety in the sentences and paragraphs? Each element can offer insights.

Your daily readings offer countless examples: most of them ordinary, some good, and a few outstanding. Study the best and grow in your craft.
