Discarded Plans

Will you settle for something better?

I was really proud of the plan I’d created for the next issue of the magazine. Just a few days after sending May/June to the printer, I’d decided on good mix of articles for July/August.

Then an amazing article—a must-run item—crossed my desk. No problem; I’d swap it for my plan’s lead article and leave everything else intact.

Except my new cover article demanded a companion piece. So I got in touch with an author, and he quickly sent me a three-pager. Together, the two are dynamite—covering aspects of an issue deeply applicable to my readers.

The revised plan lasted another day.

But that meant I had to postpone another article and reshuffle my issue plan. The revised plan lasted another day—when the organization said I need to include two other articles.

So I tore up most of what remained from my first plan and drafted a new map for July/August, based on the great new articles. It’s not the plan I envisioned a week ago. It’s far better.

And with all the solid articles I had to postpone, I’m already well on my way for September/October. But for the time being, I’ll hold that issue’s plan loosely.
