Places for People Watching

A trip to this store opened my eyes.

When my wife suggested we stop at the Ikea store, I thought we’d come away with just some Swedish meatballs. But we also discovered a great place to watch two kinds of people.

Since the megastore specializes in inexpensive, practical furniture, the place swarmed with young couples preparing to set up housekeeping. In second place were families buying items for their young children.

What an opportunity for writers who aren’t in either group, but who wish to write about them.

At such a store you can see how they dress, how they speak, and how they relate to one another. Look closely at their shopping and you can catch a glimpse of what they value and how they make decisions.

Writing for other groups? Ponder awhile and you’ll think of places they gather. You’ll discover details to empower your writing.
