Use the right planning system.
The discussions keep appearing. Someone asks about proprietary software designed to help authors structure their writing. Then dozens of users chime in.
Whenever such a session is scheduled at a writing conference, the room is packed. Writers want a surefire shortcut to keep their work on track.
Do all successful writers use such products? Hardly. The professionals use whatever makes sense for them.
Last evening I watched a mini documentary on how a popular TV drama was written. Did those writers use a particular software? Not for the most important phases.
Instead, the team took advantage of a tool that was highly effective, but also low tech. They recorded and organized the drama’s key scenes with a bulletin board and index cards.
Why so low tech? Because it works – and especially because it works for them.
Convinced some special software will help your writing? Investigate and give it a try. But if a low tech approach seems better for you, it probably is.
